TeamBDA is Bermuda’s entry in the 2017 Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, a competition designed to create a pathway for young sailors into the highest level of international sailing.
TeamBDA was adopted by ORACLE TEAM USA as its representative in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. This guaranteed TeamBDA qualification into the competition which will take place from June 12-21, 2017, as part of the 35th America’s Cup racing schedule, in Bermuda and feature up to 16 teams from around the world.
The final team was selected through a series of grueling physical and mental assessments that initially sought to identify athletes capable of withstanding the extreme physical challenge of racing a foiling catamaran – sailing ability was just one of the criteria looked at in evaluating the candidates.
At the tryouts participants were assigned numbers to ensure impartiality. All the athletes selected needed to be between the ages of 18 and 24 at the time of the 2017 regatta.
In December 2015, an initial group of 30 candidates were identified. The team’s coaches then conducted a number of intensive training camps that further tested the ability to compete at the elite level of this competition. These camps also began introducing sailing to those athletes with little or no sailing experience.
In August, 2016, a final team of 11 young Bermudians, from a variety of sailing and non-sailing backgrounds, was announced.
Connor Astwood, Edmund Mackenzie Cooper, Peter Dill, Philip Hagen, Mustafa Ingham, Emily Nagel, Danny Pell, Owen Siese, Dimitri Stevens, Shomari Warner and Ceci Wollmann
The team is managed by professional sailing coaches and fitness trainers as they prepare mentally and physically to race an AC45, the same foiling catamaran being raced by the America’s Cup teams in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series, against some of the best youth sailors in the world.
In order to practice foiling the team has acquired a GC32, a 32-foot foiling catamaran capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots. This boat has been dubbed “CAT-5” by the team. They also maintain and practice in Nacra 17s, an Olympic Class catamaran, and a Phantom, a two-person foiling catamaran that was donated to the team by ORACLE TEAM USA.
The team can be found regularly practicing on the Great Sound, working out in the gym or maintaining the boats and equipment from their base on Darrell’s Island.
